Over the centuries, different definitions of health have been used. Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a state of complete well-being that is free from disease or infirmity. However, the term is ambiguous. The World Bank defines it as a state of good health, in which an individual has no visible signs of illness. The WHO definition also emphasizes the importance of maintaining good health. So, what is the right definition of health?
A search of PubMed using ‘health’ and ‘definition’ turned up less than 20 papers. This suggests that there is no universally accepted definition of health. In fact, the US National Institutes of Health, which conducts research on diseases, should be called the National Institutes of Disease. That way, the focus of the institutes would be on diseases, not health. Nonetheless, the new concept of ‘Global’ Health has made it fashionable to refer to health as ‘whole’, which is not very helpful.
The World Health Organization defines health as a complete physical, social, and psychological well-being. It is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. In other words, health exists when you feel good and are free from disease and infirmity. It is not just a physical state that is good for you; it is also a social state. This is a common misconception among people, who tend to see health in terms of illness and diseases, but in reality, the three components of health are closely interconnected and work together to improve health.
In the modern day, health is defined as the absence of disease. However, people’s feelings and observations are irrelevant in determining whether someone is healthy or not. The medical profession has declared a person healthy based on medical criteria. Despite the fact that we can’t control what people feel, the fact that the medical profession has declared them as “healthy” makes them a vital part of the society. If the health of a person is a reflection of that, then it is the case that they have the right to feel better than they do now.
The third definition of health has many implications. In addition to its functional nature, health can be measured both qualitatively and quantitatively. The latter is more complex and encompassing than the former. A person’s lifelong health is a reflection of their values and their environment. For example, it should include their daily life, their activities, and their values. The doctor should not be the only person who evaluates these elements of health. The third definition of health must include the person’s attitude toward their physical and mental state and how that affects their wellbeing.
The WHO definition of health is the most commonly accepted definition. While the concept of health is not yet well-defined, the concept is important. The word itself means “wellbeing”. The WHO has described health as “the ability to live well” and is the most widely used definition in the world. It is not an easy thing to define and defines. Those who are healthy are able to do what they want and to adapt to their environment. The ability to live in a place where there are resources and opportunities are limited.
