The Definition of Health

The definition of “health” is an arbitrary and problematic one. While the absence of disease is the most obvious indicator of health, it is a limiting one, excluding a large segment of the population. Furthermore, the medical profession is able to declare someone as healthy based on its criteria. Thus, it is not useful to rely on a person’s own personal feelings or observations of their behavior, unless these observations fit the medical standards.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing. It is the absence of disease and the state of being physically, emotionally, and socially intact. The definition of health incorporates both physical and social factors, as well as the interactions between them. In contrast, the traditional medical definition of health focuses on a disease’s symptoms and treatment, which is known as communicable disease. Non-communicable diseases, on the other hand, are a result of a person’s lifestyle and structural factors.

Several factors contribute to a person’s health, including physical, mental, and social resources. The World Health Organization defines health as complete physical, mental, and social well-being. Those factors can be enhanced through lifestyle changes that are supportive of good health. These factors can help promote or maintain a person’s happiness and quality of life. If a person is healthy, they can cope with stress, learn new skills, and build healthy relationships.

However, this ‘complete health’ concept of health is a flawed idea. Few people have a perfect state of physical and mental well-being. As a result, this view of health is counterproductive and ignores the role of disabilities and chronic illnesses. This concept can also lead to over-medicalization of society, which is the main cause of many of the illnesses and conditions we face today. The World Bank outlines a wide range of measures to promote health.

The concept of health has changed. In the past, health was defined as the absence of disease. But nowadays, it is seen as a state of complete wellbeing. The absence of disease is no longer the only indicator of good health. The ability to cope with stress is a sign of physical and mental wellbeing. This means that a person can be happy, content, and have a healthy relationship. These factors are vital for a person’s health.

Until recently, health has been defined as the absence of illness. Modern health care focuses on an individual’s mental and physical capacities and stresses the importance of social and emotional resources. The World Health Organization defines a person’s health as “a state of well-being without distinction of race, religion, political belief, or economic condition”. The term has evolved over the years as it has evolved. It is no longer simply a physical or mental state but, rather, it is a social and emotional state.
